Facts:
My client lives out of state. He applied for a job and found out that he had a warrant from 2018 from Pinellas County for no worker’s compensation insurance and unlicensed contracting. One was a felony and one was a misdemeanor.

The charges arose from when he lived in Pinellas County and was helping his father. His father has an addiction problem and took a down payment of $500 to do work on a woman’s home. My client was with him when the job was quoted. The job was never done and the woman reported them to the police.

The case eventually got referred to the State Attorney’s Office, who charged my client with felony failure to have worker’s compensation insurance and misdemeanor unlicensed contracting. My client’s father was not charged. The warrant had sat there since 2018 with no arrest and no action.

Since then, my client had moved out of state and no longer had a relationship with his father.

The Case:
I contacted the prosecutor in charge of the old warrant cases and explained the circumstances. The prosecutor spoke to the victim and she confirmed that she lost $500. The prosecutor offered that if my client paid the victim the $500, the charges would be dismissed.

The Result:
My client mailed the victim a check for $500 and we sent the proof to the State Attorney’s Office. The charges were then dismissed.
